Terminology: To me, a Hot Spot is equivalent to an IP Zone, public IP Zone, Wireless Internet Zone (WIZ). It is a term used on a WLAN available to customers, visitors, gusts or whoever passes by, for free or for money. A WLAN or Wireless LAN is a wider term, describing any closed or open wireless network based on the 802.11x protocols. I would not call Bluetooth, HiperLAN or other wireless technologies for WLANs, but they may be used to construct Hot Spots. In Norwegian, "IP Sone" should be the term for Hot Spot, and "Trådløst lokalnett" the term for WLAN. The term "Trådløst Bredbånd" is for me related to broadband access to the Internet from home, SOHO or small offices, and can be created using 802.1x, 802.16 or other technologies. A small collection of WI-FI resources that I have found useful: The WI-FI Alliance (formely WECA) is the main WLAN industry consortium performing interoperability testing of products and joint marketing. WI-FIPlanet is THE main source of information on Hot Spots and the business side of wireless LANs. They also have many well-written and interesting tutorials and in-depth articles. Tom's Hardware
has a many "Need-to-know" technical articles, often based on
real life tests. Intel Centrino Wireless pages contains links both to Intel technology, business cases, and WLAN standard issues. Cisco slide set on the new standards And a small powerpoint presentation (in Norwegian) from me Standards: AES, - Advanced Encryption Standard, - next generation WLAN crupto. Alphabet soup overview1 and overwiew2 (not by me this time) SurfNet in the Netherland has an overview of security with some vendor information The informal "Wireless Security page" has a lot of links to standards and articles, go here if you need to find a standard or a document on a technology. (Written by Bernard Aboba, Microsoft architect and Internet Architecture Board (IAB) member). Interlinks WhitePaper collection FreeNetworks.org tells an alternative business story A WLAN WebLogger that seems very updated on US industry news And, - finally: Post og Teletilsynet's WLAN regelverk. og Samferdselsdepartementets forskrifter om offentlige nett (teletjenester) |
